Access to drinking water in the village of Agotové, where there is neither water nor electricity

Following an in-depth diagnosis carried out in August 2023, in order to ensure the sustainability of the use and maintenance of our solutions, and to replicate the project on a larger scale in other villages, we have identified the village of Agotové.

This village of around 900 inhabitants, several kilometers from Notsè via a dirt track, is the most deprived of the villages we visited. It is a village where there is very little rural exodus, even among the young. There is no running water, no electricity, no latrines, and no health center. The water of the distant river settles before being consumed without filtration or modern chlorination, causing diarrhea, cholera, and dysenteries.

Out of the 3 boreholes that were drilled, only one is operational (a hand pump), and the water table is increasingly drying up.

The very first borehole dates back to 1985 and is dry; the latest borehole has been drilled but does not yet have a pump installed and is quite far from the places of consumption. There are also no streams near the village.

Here, fetching water is a chore, usually done by teachers and schoolchildren every day before going to school. In addition, some residents of the surrounding villages also use the only operational water point.

Sanitation: Open defecation accounts for 100 % of practices. There are no latrines whatsoever, neither household nor community ones. Unanimously, the residents would like to have ECOSAN-type latrines shared in groups of 5 or 6 neighbors, rather than community latrines.

A vital project in 5 stages

Step by step, AirLife deployed atmospheric water generators of about 30 liters per day in the health centers and at the school, then a large generator of 500 liters per day at the village center, thanks to solar energy.

STEP 6 · AUGUST 2026: IT'S DONE!

A 500-liter-per-day atmospheric water generator now operates in the center of the village of Agotové, Supplied with 100% solar power % by the solar panel. The 900 residents no longer have to carry out the tedious task of water collection from the manual pump well, which is often dry and polluted with nitrates. A village committee, formed by our partner APESMIR, manages this new public resource.
